Loc Process Explained

The Loc Process Explained by TT da Loctician ✨ (with images)

Locs are a journey, not just a hairstyle. They go through natural stages of growth and transformation, each with its own beauty. Understanding the process helps you know what to expect, stay patient, and embrace every stage of your crown.

🌱 Stage 1: Starter Locs (0 – 3 months)

This is where your journey begins. Locs are created using methods like coils, two-strand twists, braids, or interlocking. At this stage, your hair is still soft and easily undone. Maintenance and consistency are important here to help your hair “train” and start holding its shape so coming every 4-6 weeks during this time is essential for correct form of the locs.

🌿 Stage 2: Budding (3 – 9 months)

This is where the magic begins! You’ll start to notice little “buds” forming along the length of your locs – these are sections of hair beginning to tangle and mat together and look fatter and thicker than the rest . Your locs might look frizzy, puffy, or uneven, but don’t panic ! this is a normal and healthy part of the journey. This stage is usually when my clients feel tempted to give up, but it’s actually progress! Locs is a journey of will, faith , determination and consistency.

🌳 Stage 3: Teenage / Teenage Locs (9 – 18 months)

At this point, your locs have a mind of their own. They may stick up, shrink, or do their own thing – and that’s okay! This stage is all about patience and letting them form their individuality. Your locs are maturing, gaining weight, and becoming less easy to unravel. You’ll also start to notice your personal loc pattern becoming more consistent. At this stage your locs are gaining weight and heaviness so it combats strinkage - people tend to see their true length at this stage.

🌴 Stage 4: Mature Locs (18 – 24+ months)

Your locs have officially settled! They feel thicker, heavier, and are fully locked. The frizz calms down, and you’ll notice length retention more clearly. At this stage, maintenance is simpler, and you can really start to enjoy the versatility and health of your crown.

Please note ; Everyone’s hair is unique, so timing may vary depending on texture, density, and how well you maintain your locs. Some people mature faster, some slower – and both are completely normal.
